DESCRIPTION OF WORK / BIOSKETCH
I am a neuropsychologist with a longstanding interest in cognitive neuroscience. The goal of my research is to illuminate the neural basis and nature of fundamental cognitive deficits in schizophrenia. I am particularly interested in prefrontal cortex contributions to working memory and executive function. The goal of my R01 is to identify the neural underpinnings of discrete executive functions using complementary neuroimaging techniques: fMRI, Diffusion Tensor Imaging (DTI), and magnetoencephalography (MEG). These studies will characterize the spatiotemporal dynamics underlying intact executive function in health, and will pinpoint how these processes go awry in neuropsychiatric disorders, specifically schizophrenia, autism, and obsessive compulsive disorder. These projects stem from a series of behavioral eye movement studies that identified differential deficits in inhibition and response monitoring in these disorders. Identifying the spared and impaired neural circuitry that underlies these deficits can guide investigations of neuropathology and the development of targeted interventions. In addition, evidence suggests that the neural signatures of these deficits distinguish between these disorders and may therefore serve as endophenotypes. A related pursuit involves characterizing sleep-related memory consolidation deficits in schizophrenia.
