DESCRIPTION OF WORK / BIOSKETCH

I obtained my B.S. in chemistry (U. of Wisconsin, Madison), Ph.D. in biochemistry (State University of NY at Stony Brook), and did a Post-doctoral fellowship in the laboratory of Guido Guidotti (Harvard University), where I collaborated with Lew Cantley in discovering the biological actions of vanadate.   I was a co-founder of AMAG Pharmaceuticals and then served as its Vice-President and Chief Scientific Officer (1982-1997), developing magnetic nanoparticles for applications in biology and medicine.  I joined the Ralph Weissleder at the Center for Molecular Imaging Research in 1998. Currently, I am a member of the Martinos Center for Biomedical Imaging, a member of the Center for Translational Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imagining (Department of Nuclear Medicine) at MGH, and an Associate Professor at Harvard Medical School.  My research interests include (i) self-activating viridin prodrugs, (ii) the use of magnetic particles for MR based sensors, (iii) the design and synthesis of radioactive, magnetic and fluorescent imaging probes, for PET, MRI, or fluorescence imaging and, (iv) the design of multimodal probes for visualizing cell death. I am a co-founder and a consultant for T2 Biosystems, a company developing MR based assays and sensors.
