DESCRIPTION OF WORK / BIOSKETCH
My research has two primary focuses 1) neuroanatomical and neuroimaging of the medial temporal lobe in the human brain and 2) the neuropathological changes in Alzheimer’s disease. The entorhinal cortex, which makes up the medial most area of the temporal lobe has a unique cytoarchitecture and its layer II neurons are among the first cells affected with neurofibrillary tangles, one of the two pathological hallmarks in Alzheimer’s disease. Our results show novel detection of the entorhinal islands in high resolution and high field MR. After scanning, tissue blocks are processed histologically and correlated with imaging data. Our data focus on the medial temporal lobe which has a rich cerebral architecture in the normal human brain and is profoundly affected in many neurological diseases.
