DESCRIPTION OF WORK / BIOSKETCH
I am a neuroradiologist with an interest in the interactions between weak electromagnetic fields and biological systems, especially the extent to which the fields do or do not have biological effects. My current project does not have to do with biological effiects, but rather with the possibility of using weak microwaves to derive information from biological systems. In this project we are looking for changes in rat brain permittivity at microwave (MW) frequencies that coincid with physiological changes, particularly with changes in blood flow. We pace a probe on rat calvarium, apply weak MW through the probe, and measure the reflection coefficient, which is the complex number that describes the signal that is reflected back into the probe by the underlying tissue. We have looked at changes caused by hypercapnea and are now looking for changes with forepaw stimulation. Eventually we intend to calculate permittivity values from reflection coefficient data. A very long term goal of this work is functional microwave imaging.
