DESCRIPTION OF WORK / BIOSKETCH

As a clinical pediatric neuropsychologist I investigate the variability of brain inhibitory networks in the course of development and psychopathological disorders, as reflected in brain spatiotemporal dynamics, alpha oscillatory activity and brain anatomy. I devote my studies primarily to obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), deemed to have developmental and genetic origins, and to acquired toxic brain conditions, as in children treated with CNS chemotherapy for cancer. I employ neuropsychology and combined brain imaging technology (anatomical and functional MRI, magnetoencephalography, and electroencephalography). Currently, I pursue studies of patients with OCD and their asymptomatic family members, and of young successful survivors of acute lymphoblastic leukemia on the relationship between the immune system, brain function and behavior. The goal is to find endophenotypes, the quantitative traits associated with susceptibility to a disorder, but also with a capacity to deal with it. The ultimate aim is to develop novel preventive interventions.
