DESCRIPTION OF WORK / BIOSKETCH

I am interested in mapping the neural substrates of somatosensory perception and understanding how somatosensory stimuli are combined with existing cognitive percepts. Currently, I am investigating how CAM techniques such as acupuncture modify brain activity. Although it is not widely accepted in western medicine, acupuncture has been used for centuries in Asia to treat a broad range of ailments including chronic pain. Unfortunately, the mechanisms by which acupuncture exerts its therapeutic effects are largely unknown. In collaboration with Vitaly Napadow and the PPG group, I will be using MEG and fMRI to determine the spatiotemporal pattern of brain activity supporting different types of acupuncture and determine they differ from sham treatment. I am also presently collaborating on studies mapping the semantic and phonological aspects of word encoding.
