DESCRIPTION OF WORK / BIOSKETCH
Dr. Schendan investigates the brain dynamics for human vision, memory, and learning. Her research focuses on understanding how the human brain supports cognitive decisions based on object memory under diverse visual and task conditions, including the roles of learning and spatial analysis. To accomplish this, her research integrates several domains, all in the visual modality: perception, object constancy, long-term knowledge and memory (emphasizing processes and representations for categorization, semantic memory, episodic recognition, and implicit memory), learning, and spatial cognition, as well as working memory and decision-making, which are intimately related to the other domains. (a) Event-related potentials (ERPs) time the cortical processing, (b) functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) of the human brain across the life span, transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), and neuropsychological studies of patients with brain dysfunction (e.g., Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease) reveal the functional neuroanatomy and causal role, and neurocomputational modeling facilitates theory development.
