DESCRIPTION OF WORK / BIOSKETCH
My research is focused on using multinuclear solid state MR (magnetic resonance)
imaging and spectroscopy to characterize bone. Proton solid state MRI is used to
measure the degree of bone mineralization (the proportion of bone mineral to
organic bone matrix), which will provide physicians with a novel means to
distinguish osteomalacia (the clinical consequences of defective mineralization
of the matrix), from osteoporosis without painful biopsy, and help in their
therapeutic decisions for patients with bone fractures. Phosphorus solid state
MRI is used to measure bone mineral density. Solid state NMR spectroscopy is
used to learn about the composition of bone mineral and synthetic biological
calcium phosphates, which in turn enables us to understand the development and
pathology of bone.
