Active Introduction to EEG/MEG, fMRI, High-Resolution MR and fMRI, NIRS, PET, and TMS

This 5-day program will run Monday-Friday. The program is an adaptation of the two-week, government-sponsored program on multi-modal imaging held each year in the spring, at the Martinos Center for Biomedical Imaging. (For details on that program, see Multi-Modal Short Course.) However, unlike that program (which requires competitive applications and notification by March 15 of the program year about offers of acceptance), the present program is being offered on a "first come, first served" basis. Total enrollment will be limited.

This program will be organized as indicated in the tentative schedule, below. For the first three days, each 1/2 day will be devoted to one imaging modality as used in the context of functional brain research. The content will focus on the underlying physics, experimental design, data analysis, and a few of the currently cutting edge applications of each technology. A special emphasis will be made to show when and how the information from different modalities can complement each other, and facilitate additional conclusions not obtainable by one modality alone. In addition to classroom lectures, participants will engage in experimental design workshops, tours of the relevant equipment, and demonstrations of the equipment for each modality.

 

CURRICULUM

Students will receive a firm grounding in the fundamentals of each modality. This will include the basic physics of the technology, the biology and biophysics underlying the technology; data analysis as it is done specifically with respect to the basic technologies, and also as it is implemented when trying to integrate the various structural and functional data obtained from each modality.

A special emphasis of the course will be the design, implementation, and execution of perceptual and/or cognitive experiments by the participants. Participants will break into small groups to design their own experiments. These exercises will be an ongoing activity during the program, and will be facilitated by evening workshops. The results of the group designs will be presented and discussed on the final day of the workshop.

The modalities include:
 
High-Resolution MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) with an empahsis on the possibilities engendered by imaging at 7Tesla and beyond, including the associated dramatic increase in spatial resolution which can, in some applications, resolve excitations within cortical layers. Diffusion Tensor Imaging (DTI), Diffusion Spectrum Imaging (DSI), and MR Spectroscopy (MRS) will be mentioned at various times during the program.
 
fMRI (Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging) with an emphasis on the ways in which fMRI data can be integrated with data from other modalities. Note: Because fMRI is by far the most widely used functional brain imaging modality, it will be assumed that participants have some familiarity with it. A review, in 1/2 day, will be included, but the emphasis will be on the ways in which fMRI combines with other modalities, rather than being the focus of attention by itself. PET (Positron Emission Tomography), and its new integration with MRI, as used in equipment that can collect both PET and MRI/fMRI data simultaneously to facilitate structural and functional studies. There will be a discussion of the range of available ligands for binding, and the associated implications for cognitive and clinical research, with an emphasis on implications for the future of imaging-based psychiatric diagnosis.
 
NIRS (Near Infrared Spectroscopy) with an emphasis on the flexibility introduced by having relatively inexpensive and portable equipment for monitoring cerebral blood. Recent advances made possible via the use of NIRS data to enhance noise reduction in fMRI and other modalities will be discussed.
 
EEG/MEG (Electro- and Magneto- Encephalography) including the simultaneous collection of EEG data with fMRI data, even at 7 Tesla. Because of the inherent complementarity in terms of spatial and temporal resolution between EEG/MEG and fMRI/PET, there will be a particularly rich discussion of integrating these data accross modalities.
 
TMS (Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation) is the only technology currently available for facilitating or disrupting known axonal pathways in the service of elucidating the causal relationships within functional brain imaging. Demonstrations will be conducted, and the use of TMS to elicidate existing cortical connections will be emphasized in the applications. In addition, the crucial role of real-time guidance using previously collected MRI and fMRI data will be discussed and demonstrated.

Because this is a new program, we have been uncertain about the level of interest. However, responses to our initial announcements has been encouraging. In the interest of making planning possible, especially for oversees visitors, we have decided to DEFINITELY hold the program this year, during the specified period of December 13-17, 2010. We encourage out-of-town visitors to secure accommodation, and to use the information given at the bottom of this page.

 

FACULTY

The core faculty is drawn from the staff of the Athinoula A. Martinos Center (of the Massachusetts General Hospital and Massachusetts Institute of Technology) and affiliated faculty from Harvard University, Boston University, McLean Hospital and other institutions. Budget permitting, additional outside speakers will be invited to participate.

FUNDING and FEEs

This program, like the fMRI Visiting Fellowship Program, is sponsored in part by the Athinoula A Martinos Center for Biomedical Imaging, which provides space, various imaging resources, and most of the faculty. The remainder of the funding is provided by participant tuition. This tuition will be: US$1500 for regular participants and US$1000 for graduate students. (Post-doctoral trainees who are unable to get institutional or grant funding—and must therefore pay the tuition out-of-pocket—are eligible for a discounted rate of US$1250.)
