CURRICULUM

Introduction: Getting Started with SPM8 is one-day workshop designed for investigators with some experience in functional neuroimaging but no previous experience using SPM.

Content: The workshop will focus on the fundamentals of using the core SPM8 functions for preprocessing, statistical modeling and visualization of data associated with simple fMRI experimental designs. Lectures will be linked with interactive tutorial exercises that will provide participants with experience using SPM8. Anyone planning to use SPM as their primary statistical analysis and preprocessing software package should benefit from this program.

The presentations will include demonstrations and tutorials utilizing SPM8. Participants are expected to bring a laptop with MATLAB, SPM8 and MRIcron already installed.

Educational Objectives

   * Understand the basic organization of the SPM GUI
   * Understand the organization of the SPM "toolbox"
   * Understand the basic fMRI data preprocessing steps
   * Be able to construct a preprocessing sequence including realignment, and spatial filtering
   * Be able to implement segmentation of structural volumes
   * Be able to implement statistical analysis procedures for block and stochastic fMRI designs
   * Be able to interpret the SPM8 results table
   * Be able to construct a batch script including:
                  preprocessing
                  design specification
                  estimation

Other

Lunch each day is scheduled for 90 minutes. During the last 45 minutes of that period, faculty will be available for informal discussions, or brief presentations related to topics not directly included in the lectures.

The primary faculty for this program will normally be Tom Zeffiro, Susan Whitfield-Gabrieli, Robert Savoy and/or their staff.
