Remotely connect to your NMR Linux workstation from The Martinos Center (inside the firewall).

1. Check to see if NX is already installed on your linux workstation.

ssh to the computer and run 'cat /usr/etc/nxclient.key'. If this file exists, it means NX is installed; copy the key, as you will need it later.

If it doesn't exist send email to and ask to have NX server installed on your linux workstation.
Remember to specify the name of your linux workstation in the email.

2. Download the the latest NX Client for Windows & font packages.

If the Partners firewall blocks your access to this page, you can try mapping network drive \\surfer.nmr.mgh.harvard.edu\extras\Win_Software\NX\ to install client version 3.5.0-9.

3. Install the NX client.

a. Double-click .exe file to run the Setup Wizard.

b. Choose the default settings in the Setup Wizard until it completes.

4. Run the NX Client

a. Open the NX Client icon from your desktop.

b. Choose an arbitrary Session name; enter you linux hostname; leave the default port; choose LAN speed.

The hostname michigan.nmr.mgh.harvard.edu is used here just as an example; do not use it.

c. Change desktop from KDE to GNOME.

d. Show the Advanced Configuration dialog.

e. Set the key.

  • Highlight and delete the default key.
  • Paste in the key from your linux workstation (step #1 above) and save it.
  • You need to include the BEGIN DSA and END DSA lines.

f. Save your configuration.

g. Login with your NMR username and password.

  • If prompted by Windows Firewall, choose to unblock NX traffic.

h. If prompted, accept the RSA key finger print.

i. Success!

  • Your gnome desktop should load. If it does not, go back and check the previous steps.
