| Remote Access with NX |
• 1. ssh to your linux workstation and run 'cat /usr/etc/nxclient.key'. You will need this key in step #18 below. If it doesn't exist to have
NX server installed on your linux workstation. Remember to specify the name
of your linux workstation in the email.
On the Windows computer you will be using from outside the center:
• 2. Download putty.exe (unless you already have it installed).
• 3. Download the NX Client for Windows as well as the four Add-On font packages that are
available at http://www.nomachine.com/download-client-windows.php. Install the client first before
installing the fonts.
• 4. Open putty.
• 5. Enter gate.nmr.mgh.harvard.edu
for the Host Name and enter gate_nx under Saved Sessions. |
• 6. In the category menu on the left, click on "Tunnels"
• 7. Enter a Source port of 5022.
• 8. For the Destination, you should enter the name of the linux workstation running
the NX server followed by a colon and 22. (In this example, we are
attempting to create a tunnel to the destination michigan:22).
• 9. You must click the 'Add' button.
Note:If you use NX to connect remotely to more than one linux host, you will need to create a
separate tunnel with a unique Source port for each. For a secondary connection, use 5023, tertiary use 5024 etc.
• 10. In the category menu on the left, click on "Session"
• 11. Click the 'Save' button to save all the changes you've made.
• 12. Now double-click on 'gate_nx' to open a terminal
window.
• 13. Login using your NMR username and password. Once you have logged in, you can
minimize the window. As long as the window remains open, the tunnel will exist and you will be able to use NX.
NOTE: Steps #1 through #11 are setup steps and only need to be performed the first time you
connect to NX. For any future connections to NX, start with step #12.
• 14. Open NX Client. When the wizard opens, choose a session name that includes the name of
your linux workstation. The Host must be localhost and the Port must be changed to 5022. Choose appropriate network connection type and then click 'Next.'
• 15. Most users will want to change the desktop type from KDE to GNOME. Leave all other options unchanged from their default values. Click 'Next.'
• 16. You must check the box to 'Show the Advanced Configuration dialog.' Then click 'Finish.'
• 17. Click on 'Key...'
• 18. Open an ssh connection to your linux workstation and run:
cat /usr/etc/nxclient.key
(On older systems, the key might be located at /etc/nxserver/nxclient.key and if neither of these files
exist, it
means NX is not installed on your linux computer and you likely skipped step #1 above.)
• 19. Copy/paste the entire key, including the BEGIN and END lines into the NX Key management
window. Then click 'Save.' Then click 'Ok.'
• 20. Click 'Yes' to save your configuration.
• 20. Login using your NMR username and password.
NOTE: If prompted by Windows Firewall, choose to unblock NX traffic. If the authenticity of the
host can't be established, continue connecting anyway.
