Direct TCP/IP Printing Through PRINTSRV

We prefer people to still print through our PRINTSRV print server so we can better track and administer printing. This is done using the IPP protocol which Windows supports.

For Windows 7

Go into Devices and Printers and click Add a printer.

Click Add a network, wireless or Bluetooth printer.

Click Stop to end searching for printers. Then click The printer that I want isn't listed.

Choose Select a shared printer by name and then enter:

http://printsrv.nmr.mgh.harvard.edu:631/printers/printername-raw

where printername is the name of the printer as used in Linux such as sccolor, deca, or b36. Click Next.

You will be prompted for to identify the printer so the correct driver can be installed. If the model is not listed, click Have Disk... and then Browse to:

\\gpfs02.nmr.mgh.harvard.edu\extras\printing

Enter your NMR username and password, but make sure to prepend 'MRIRESEARCH\' to your username so it looks like this:

MRIRESEARCH\johnsmith

You will then see several directories with the name of printer models. Look for the driver in the directory of the model that matches the printer you wish to add. Also, some directories have additional subdirectories for the version of Windows you are running such as win2k_nt. Once you find the right driver, continue and the setup should finish. If you don't see a folder corresponding to the model printer you're installing you will need to download the driver directly from the printer manufacturer.

For Windows XP/2000

Go into the Printers setup area and delete the current printer(s). Then click "Add new printer" and then click Next. Choose "A network printer" and click Next. Then choose "Connect to a printer on the Internet ..." (see below if this is greyed out) and enter as the URL:

http://printsrv.nmr.mgh.harvard.edu:631/printers/printername-raw

where printername is the name of the printer as used in Linux such as sccolor, deca, or b36. Click Next. Then you will have to install the driver yourself. Click the Have Disk button and then for the location type in:

If your choice for "Connect to a printer on the Internet ..." is greyed out, cancel and then do this. Go to Control Panel -> Add/remove programs -> Windows Components and check off "Other network and print services" and then click Next to install that. Then go back to "Add new printer" and try again.

Direct TCP/IP Printing to Printer

If the above using the IPP protocol does not work, you can try printing direct to most printers using the HP Jetdirect protocol.

For Windows 7

  • Go into Devices and Printers and click Add a printer.
  • Click Add a network, wireless or Bluetooth printer.
  • Don't wait while it tries to auto-find printers. Hit Stop and click on The printer that I want isn't listed
  • Choose Add a printer using a TCP/IP address or hostname
  • Set Device Type: to autodetect
  • For Hostname or IP address enter the IP for the desired printer as listed on our main Printing page.
  • Leave the Port name to whatever Windows sets as the default.
  • Check the box to Query the printer and automatically select the drive to use
  • Click next
  • Rename the printer and set it as the default if you like
  • click next

For Windows XP/2000

Follow the directions at here.

For step 9, the Full Address Printer Names of our printers are

sc complabprinter.nmr.mgh.harvard.edu
sccolor sccolor.nmr.mgh.harvard.edu
b36 and b75 bldg36printer.nmr.mgh.harvard.edu
b36c and b75c bldg36color.nmr.mgh.harvard.edu
deca deca.nmr.mgh.harvard.edu
decacolor decacolor.nmr.mgh.harvard.edu
cyclades cyclades.nmr.mgh.harvard.edu
admin nmradminprinter.nmr.mgh.harvard.edu
admincolor admincolor.nmr.mgh.harvard.edu

For step 12, if you don't find the driver, click Have Disk and then in the file dialog that comes up navigate to \\gpfs02\extras\printing where we have in directories drivers for the printers types above.

For OSX Tiger

  1. Open the Printer Setup Utility (located in /Applications/Utilities/).
  2. Click the "Add" button in the toolbar.
  3. Select "IP Printer" in the dialog toolbar.
  4. For Protocol, choose "HP Jet Direct".
  5. For Address/IP, enter the Full Address Printer Name of the printer as you see in the Windows section above.
  6. For Name, enter the short printer name or whatever you like
  7. For Print Using, use the "Apple LaserWriter II NT" though the "Generic Postscript" printer should work for most printers.
