Obtaining a Computer Account

Policy change effective 6/8/2009: new account applicants MUST HAVE a 9-digit MGH employee, or non-employee number in order to receive an NMR account. If you are requesting an account for someone who has neither, you must get authorization from Dee Dee Correia before the account can be created.

New accounts can only be requested by Martinos Center PIs or their designated administrators. If you are a new PI at the Martinos Center, fill out the form using yourself as both the PI and new user. Then in the comments specify that you are a new PI. We will then need to verify your status before processing the application.

These instructions are for obtaining a Martinos Center computer and e-mail account. If you need a Partners system e-mail account you must call the Partners help desk.

If you simply wish to add an existing user account to a scanner project, please e-mail the request with the PI's name, the user name to be added and project code to Karen Dervin (karend@nmr).

Requests are logged and normally handled within 24 business hours after approval by the given PI/supervisor. Fields in red are required.

Comments:

[1] The account will normally be created with the same password as the PI or supervisor requesting the account. If you would rather have your password set to that of another person who has an account with us, specify that in the comment field.

[2] Your MGH ID number is located on the back of your ID badge. It is 9-digits long. If you need to obtain a non-employee ID number, you will need to go through the process outlined here.

[3] A Scanner Login only account will not include permission to login to the center UNIX machines. Currently, a Full UNIX Shell Login is required to fetch data that was pushed to the raw scanner archive.

[4] To figure out what groups you belong to, login to a Martinos Center Linux computer and run the 'groups' command. If you are still unsure, give the locations of files the user should have write access to in the Comments field.

[5] New users are automatically put on the all and all-accounts mailing lists. Subscription to these two lists is compulsory for all accounts. If a forwarding address is given in the form above, subscriptions will be made using the forwarding address. This does not automatically change if later the user disables forwarding.

Examples of other important lists are on the Mailing Lists page. NOTE, we cannot subscribe users to Yahoo groups.

[6] These are the three letter project codes used for MRI/MEG scanner login and billing. These will be forwarded to Karen Dervin for approval after the account is created.

After the account is created and verification of same has been received by the PI or supervisor, the account password may be changed. The PI or supervisor can use the Password Change Page to do this by supplying the user's login name, the PI or supervisor's password, and having the user type in a new password in the space provided on the form. It takes approximately 15 minutes for this to propagate throughout all systems.

Partners accounts: If you are a Partner's employee, you should already have a Partner's account and should contact the MGH Help Desk 617-726-5085. If you are not an employee but need a Partner's account, you will need to go through the process outlined here.
