Mac OS X Screen Sharing

Note:
Screen Sharing will work between any two machines running OS X Snow Leopard, Lion or Mountain Lion
• You must have administrative access to the computer.
• You will also need a static IP for your machine. Request one by emailing help@nmr.mgh.harvard.edu.

Enable Screen Sharing on your Martinos Mac:
1. Open System Preferences (from the Applications folder on Macintosh HD)
2. Open Sharing (under Internet & Wireless)
3. Turn on the Screen Sharing service from the left-hand menu and press Computer Settings.
4. Place a check next to 'VNC viewers may control screen with password:' and enter a password.

 

Now that your Martinos Mac is setup for Screen Sharing, you can initiate the connection from your mac outside the Martinos Center.
5. Find the Spotlight in the top Right hand corner of your Finder menu and search for 'terminal'

6. enter the following into your terminal (NOTE: replace 'zizek' with your mac hostname): ssh -L5901:zizek:5900 alexr@door.nmr.mgh.harvard.edu

7. Make sure to keep the terminal connected to door open for as long as you want to be connected to your Martinos Mac screen.

Now that your Martinos Mac is setup for Screen Sharing, you can initiate the connection from your mac outside the Martinos Center.
8. Find the 'Go' menu item, then choose 'Connect to Server'

9. You must enter localhost:5901 as the Server. Then press Connect.

10.Enter your CNY Mac login credentials (note: your Mac username might not be the same as your NMR username -- you need to use your Mac username here.)
