In TRANSCEND, we believe that autism spectrum disorders are not brain disorders, but disorders that affect the brain. Therefore TRANSCEND aims to study both brain and body. To study the brain, we look at its structure and functions such as how the blood flows in the brain, the metabolic functions of the brain, distribution of chemicals in the brain, and how the brain processes complex information. To study the body, we look at biological functions such as the immune system, mitochondrial (cell) function and other biological measures. We are currently pursuing this through our Whole Body Infant Sibling Research Project, but are also expanding this approach to our other studies.
