Directions to the Martinos Center

Getting to the Martinos Center by Public Transportation

Take the Commuter Rail to the North Station (Fleet Center) terminal, or take the T (subway) Orange or Green Lines to North Station. There is a Partners shuttle bus stop on Causeway Street in front of the underground T stop (not on Canal Street as shown on the map above, because the stop was recently moved). This stop is across from North Station on the eastbound side of Causeway Street. The buses are white and display the Partners logo. The shuttle bus stop returning from the Navy Yard is on Causeway Street opposite Canal Street.

Alternatively, take the Red Line to Charles Street, walk to the MGH main entrance, down the entire length of the main corridor, out back to Blossom Street, turn right, and board the shuttle outside the Jackson Building entrance.

The shuttles leave every 15 minutes starting on the hour from Blossom Street, arrive at North Station a few minutes after, and arrive at the MGH Charlestown Navy Yard Building 149 about 15 minutes after leaving Blossom Street. The shuttle schedule is highly dependent on traffic conditions, and can take over 30 minutes at rush hour.

Driving to the Martinos Center (NMR Center) from Interstate 93 Southbound

Take Interstate 93 South to Exit 28 (Sullivan Square, Charlestown).

Once off the highway, take the up ramp to the left. Watch carefully for the Navy Yard sign. (However, this overpass may be closed for repairs. If so, bear right and proceed through the intersection that this overpass circumvents.)

Proceed over the overpass (if it's open), then under the underpass ahead and to the left.

Continue with "Driving to the Martinos Center (NMR Center) from Rutherford Avenue Southbound" below.

Driving to the Martinos Center (NMR Center) from Interstate 93 Northbound

Enter the new Central Artery Tunnel on I93 (labeled route 1 on the second map) Northbound, and take Exit 26 (Storrow Drive).

Once you are on the exit ramp inside the tunnel, stay in the left lane and exit the tunnel, always remaining in the left lane. Take the left fork when exiting the tunnel. Proceed through the intersection at the traffic light, and turn immediately left and then right at the next traffic light. At this point you should be proceeding over the drawbridge (labeled "N. Washington St." on both maps) spanning the Charles River. You should be driving parallel to the elevated Green Line train. The second map does not show these new connections from the now underground central artery (I93, but labeled route 1 on the second map).

Continue with "Driving to the Martinos Center (NMR Center) from Storrow Drive" below AT THE SECOND PARAGRAPH.

Driving to the Martinos Center (NMR Center) from Storrow Drive Eastbound (Route 28)

Pass the exit to Longfellow bridge (to Cambridge), the main Mass General Hospital, and Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary (MEEI). Pass (but do not take) the left exit into the new underground Central Artery (I93) near the end of Storrow drive. Just after this left exit, take the next left exit onto the Museum of Science bridge and O'Brien Highway (labeled "Science Park" on the first map) at Leverett Circle (no recognizable circle exists today).

Enter the right hand lane. You will pass the Museum of Science on your left.

Turn right onto Austin Street at the second traffic light at the sign to Charlestown.

Cross the John F. Gilmore bridge over the railroad tracks, and turn right at the end of the bridge onto Rutherford Avenue.

Continue with "Driving to the Martinos Center (NMR Center) from Rutherford Avenue Southbound" below.

Driving to the Martinos Center (NMR Center) from Rutherford Avenue Southbound

Turn left at the traffic light onto Constitution Road/Water Street/Chelsea Street as indicated by the small brown National Park Service sign to the USS Constitution/Navy Yard. Before making this left you will see the Charlestown Bridge into Boston just ahead. This intersection also has the entrance to Interstate 93 northbound.

Continue with "Driving to the Martinos Center (NMR Center) from Water Street" below.

Driving to the Martinos Center (NMR Center) from Water Street

For all approaches, follow the small brown National Park Service signs to the USS Constitution/Navy Yard until you have either passed this sailing ship or entered through the Navy Yard gate.

Continue along Constitution Road/Water Street/Chelsea Street as it curves. You will pass the USS Constitution on your right.

At 13th Street/Navy Yard Gate 5/MGH East MRI Unit sign, turn right into the Navy Yard.

You will see Building 149 (MGH Biomedical Research Laboratories) on the right, and a parking garage on the left.

Turn left, then right into the garage. After about 9 am, you will probably have to park on the 7th floor or above; do not waste time searching the lower levels.

After parking, take the elevator to the second floor inside the garage, walk across the second floor pedestrian bridge into MGH Building 149, and take the staircase to the lobby.

Because of the new MGH security policy, all visitors must stop and register at the security desk. They cannot enter the building directly and must be escorted by an MGH employee. Once at the security desk you may call me at my office 617-726-3083 or cell 617-645-4371, or Dee Dee Correia at 617-726-7700. Someone will come to escort you to the NMR Center main office on the second floor of the building near the east elevators.

Deliveries by truck are made at the Building 149 loading dock, which is reached via the alley immediately in front of Building 149 to the right. Deliveries by cart or two wheeler may be made via the pedestrian ramp at the alley.
