For teens growing up;
Life, the Universe, & Witchcraft

Because of some of the content in my site, from time to time I receive e-mail from people who have nothing to do with computers or networks. In fact this happens a lot compared to the hits I get for my resume. Depressing.

I recently received an e-mail from a young teen aged girl. And no I won’t say who. She, like me, is a viewer of Charmed on TV. And of course the questions were all about magic spells and boys. The net effect was the desire to overcome her fear of the usual things kids fear at that age.

Growing up isn’t easy. The fear we have growing up and interacting with others is often a symptom of lack of understanding and faith in one’s self. I’ll let you in on a little secret kids, it happens to adults too. A lot of people don’t feel really comfortable in their own skins. You want to get rid of the fear, you need to find a way to be happy with yourself first. You want to ask somebody on a date? First know that whoever you ask has their own fears and uncertainties. And if they should reject you, yes it will probably hurt for a bit. But in the longer run, it will be their loss not yours. Hard to believe I know, but very true.

As to magic, well, that’s a different kettle of fish. Back up a minute and consider your spirituality. Spirituality has to do with how you honor yourself and how you honor and relate to things which are bigger than you, really bigger, like the Universe and beyond. Witchcraft is one example. As are Christianity, Islam, Buddhism, Hinduism, the Jewish tradition, and other ’isms. Witchcraft in particular is a nature tradition and has to do with the universe around us and the forces that make it work. Contrary to popular belief there is nothing evil about it. Witchcraft doesn’t even have the concept of the devil in it. The modern concept of a devil was invented and solidified by the Christian Church between about the 11th and 13th centuries. The History Channel did a very good hour long documentary on it. But the information is out there for anyone to find. Witchcraft acknowledges a Creator, no devil.

Magick (with a K to distinguish it from stage magic) is the ritual by which one acknowledges and relates to the Universe and the forces that inhabit it. In Witchcraft there is no duality, the Creator and the created are one, a concept which modern physics accepts in the form of quantum entanglement. We are all one and connected. What affects you also to some extent affects me. If I harm you I harm me as well. From basic principles we thus arrive at “Harm none, and do what you will” which is considered to be a basic tenet of Witchcraft and it’s many offshoots such as Wicca.

Which brings me to another point. Actions have consequences. Whatever you put out into the Universe comes back to you. It is often spoken of in Witchcraft as the rule of 3 or the Three Fold law. Whatever you send out comes back to you multiplied; in this case times 3. Another good reason to harm none, intentionally anyway. Harm may come but intent is everything especially if you are Buddhist.

Can magic make someone love you? I will answer this by saying if you were to MAKE someone love you it would be corrupt because it would not be an honest choice. By making someone do anything you are reducing their choices and harming them. That is against the rule which says to harm none. And can real love be forced anyway? That would be no better than drugging them. While possibly pleasurable for a time there would be longer term consequences that you wouldn’t find quite so pleasant.
