On Religion and Absolute Knowledge

My mother told me this one. Unfortunately she could not remember who said it. She believes it was a gentleman of Islam. If anyone knows who or what was actually said please let me know so I can give credit where credit is due.

"Religion", she told me, "is like a many sided lantern. Each sees the lantern from a different side. But the light that shines within is the same for all."

Makes fighting over who’s is right seem a little silly doesn’t it?

I’ll add something to this. There was a TV series a while back called The Ascent of Man by Jacob Bronowski. Much of it is dated these days. But one thing that isn’t is that of Bronowski’s observation of Man’s search for absolute knowledge, religion. And this is in the face of science which tells us that absolute anything is in very very very short supply. Remember Einstein? He was right about a few things. The misguided search for absolute spiritual knowledge has lead to a great many unnecessary wars. Maybe religion is just as relative as most of the rest of the Universe.

This also makes fighting over who’s religion is right seem a little silly and wasteful.
