Blackie :
I tried updating my MacOS Runtime For Java at home, no dice, however, I
then tried clicking the "secure" button instead of the "faster" button
and that was the ticket, it worked fine. There is evidently a bug in the
Java script (I was able to see the error message in my Java console)
that runs if you do not have the "secure" button clicked on the login
page. At least that's what happened to me. Did anyone else have a
problem with the "faster" button clicked?

MacOS/Netscape java bugs happen quite often if the developers work on
W95/95 and IE. Some of them can cause really nasty system crashes that
force a complete restart.

Well, my problem (on my home machine, a Mac) has been solved. I had a
program named WebFree running which blocks stuff like banner ads etc.,
and it was apparently blocking something essential. I turned it off and
all was well.
On my work machine (UNIX) I am only running Netscape 3.0, I hope to
upgrade that and I bet it is the problem there.
Good luck figuring out your bugs!

I've put a few updates in the PHONO.TEXT.html file in PHONO CIRCUITS on the
xdrive.
Using html makes it a bit neater and it loads easier.
<http://www.xdrive.com> user name is joelist, password is noise.
Let me know of any problems.
The Arthur Loesch Phono Hugh Dean and I are working on is sounding
fantastic, but there is another version we want to try to compare it

It is a very real fact that X-Drive sucks.
I can donate 100 Megabytes of clean, password-protected, FTP space to

to download more than one file in one operation...
If I get more than 3 emails of people asking for it you'll get it.

I just hate javascript -- a non-standard standard that was foisted on us by
Netscape. I am able to download one file, then the javascript goes into an
endless loop and crashes the browser (iCab -- an example of why
Communicator and IE are going to be less prevalent in the future). So i
often find myself running Netscape to go places were the programming
doesn't work with other browsers.

Strangely enough, Xdrive works pretty well with Netscape under Linux,
which is usually a total spaz about any non-standard Javascript. Sites
tuned to IE are the worst. And since i use Linux both at work and at
home, it's a real issue for me.

If you're using a version of Windows, then instead of accessing xdrive
through your browser, try installing the xdrive client. It's very
slick, you see the files on xdrive in Windows Explorer and use
Explorer tools and commands to download and view them.

It looks like Netscape (4.7 and 4.73) has problems downloading files
from xdrive if those filenames have spaces in them. It would be helpful
if folks could use an underscore instead of a space in submitted
filenames. I could spend more time bitching about Microsoft's insane
practice of allowing spaces in filenames (against years of normal
programming practice), but I won't, as I might offend those fans of
Mr. Gates. :)

Hi everyone,
Our Xdrive system has certainly made a whole new way of working and
sharing together possible.
I put up my scans of the Fostex Sigma Series user's brochure today. It
contains a great deal of useful information and ideas for anyone thinking
about getting in the the Fostex Sigma units.
I also took the liberty of introducing some subdirectories, etc. and
organizing things a little on our Xdrive. Of course if anyone thinks what
I did isn't suitable, change it to however you prefer it! Since we all
have equal power in this we will almost certainly evolve it into
something we all can use and derive benefit from.
Best regards to all,
Aaron

Yes, and be careful with the DELETE button. I hit it by accident and
thought I'd scotched the whole enterprise. Fortunately there's that
familiar "Are you sure...?" warning.

Well as it turned out it seems Ken beat me to it. By the time I had
most of the files downloaded from wdir and got around to start ftp'ing
them to PF's site most of the were already there.
There seemed to be various duplicates so perhaps along the way we could
reorganise the site bit by bit.

I've done this a few days ago with the 20Mb or so of my own stuff I had on
xDrive, and it seems to be working OK. I use(d) xDrive as a "public"
adjunct to my website (http://www.alphalink.com.au/~cambie). My stuff is now
at idrive, username=cambie password=stuff so you're welcome to go see that
to look at an example of the different appearance and format etc. than we're
used to seeing with xDrive. Early days yet but i-drive seems to work OK?

Note that the download works if I use Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.0
I only see this error when using Netscape 4.7. Does anyone know if the

Any preference for orientation of lamination gap on EI construction SE =

I would think the gap is better on top, further away from the rest of =

Any other tips for SPU step ups? I'm using a German trans that came from
Jakobi--supposedly wound by the same little old frau that wound all the
Neumann mic transformers. They are very nice but I feel I need a little more
snap with the spherical SPU. Actually, I'm happy now but I could always get
happier, you know!
Any other sleepers among new or vintage step up transformers? Maybe I should
dig out what I have and post looking for mates for the singles, and do some
investigation myself.

David:
Study music theory?? Man, if I were in Munich, I'd stock up on Paulaner
Hefe-Weizen, fire up my 301/SPU, and LISTEN to some Magic Sam or Freddie King
and drink all the brews. I wouldn't get anything done.
A slow moving coil would be about my speed!

I'm using a pair of transformers made by Joergen Schou (Denmark),
"TYPE 0,32M No. 1035/2". These step up the signal from my DL-103R.
They are luxuriously potted in round chassis mount mumetal shielded cans.
I guess Schou transformers may be fairly exotic stuff outside Northern
Europe, but I'm told that J.S. made several transformers for Neumann
way back when... My pair might be some 20-30 years old.
Anyway, as these are the first MC trans I've used on my first low-output
MC, don't make me share my "valuable" opinions. It sounds great though.
Second your remark about Paulaner Hefe-Weizen, though it's actually
available on tap here in Trondheim, Norway (at 54kr. or about $7.50 a
pint...) at "Ludwig Bierstube". Beer experience #1 was during my last
trip to Munich in '96, drinking an Aventinus Weizenstarkbier at Weisses
Brauhaus im Tal on a Sunday morning, in the company of elegant elderly
ladies (all drinking the same incredible brew) and Bavarians in
Lederhosen, complete with Brezen and horn music.

Joe, Thomas,
I can second that the J.S. transformer for the SPU is very good choice.
A friend of mine uses it with success for his SPU in his 12 inch
Ortofon tonearm on his Garrard301.

Hey Joe, you want me to pay my SP ad bills in Wiess beer? I can ship it by
the keg...and several better than Paulaner as well.
And our local stuff doesn't get the pasterization or whatever the export

Hello
Several guys here in France are using as MC transformer
Peerless N°4629
and
UTC A11
(I possess myself a pair of UTC A11)
Also there is an MC transformer (if memory serves me corrctly its reference
is L312) build for La Maison de l'Audiophile that is very close to the
famous Denon AU301. The AU301 being the reference for most French and
Japanese audiophiles.
Best regards,

Hi all,
I use a 401, SME 12" series II and SPU gold setup. I think it sounds great.
I use some Australian made microphone step-up transformers made by a now
extinct firm called Trimax. They were bought out by Ericson many years ago
because the quality of their transformers were too good for Ericson to
compete in the local communications industry.
The transformers were made in the 1950's, have an impedance ratio of 50ohm
to 100Kohm and are triple shielded. I get about 9mV input into the RCA RIAA
(max 10mV) and get the same volume from both my line stage and phono stage.
The transformers are spec'd at +/- 1dB from 30Hz to 12KHz but I have had
them measured at +/- 0.7dB from 10Hz to 140KHz.
Just my 2 cents.
Harry.

Hallo allemaal,
Het heeft even geduurd maar uiteindelijk is er nieuws over de oscillatoren.
Een aanvankelijke leverancier in Amerika kan of wil geen kleine aantallen
leveren.
Ik heb een nieuwe leverancier gevonden. De jitter performance is
vergelijkbaar met de Raltron blokjes. De voedingsrejectie is zelfs iets
beter.
Frequentie 8.4672 MHz 11.2896 MHz 16.9344 MHz
groeten,

Guido

Sorry guys, this wasn't supposed to be sent
If anyone is interested though:
I founs a good source for low jitter performance oscilators. They are in
DIL 8, 5V, HCMOS/TTL compatible.
The following are in stock:
Frequency 8.4672 MHz 11.2896 MHz 16.9344 MHz
Each are about $12 including saes tax / excluding shipment

Runing a small tube amp on tweeters and could use a little more power
before distortion. Wondering if crossing it over, eliminating the bass
and just let it play what the tweeters are would give them more power in
that range ??
Remember reading about passive xovers ahead of amps and the values
were a lot different than for speakers. I guess the impedence causes
that. Any rough ideas on a simple xover if this will help..

Yes, this is a very good idea - the power demands are much higher at lowest
frequencies, eliminating them makes the tweeter amp's job much easier. Your
new problem then becomes crossing over to the woofer amp smoothly and
integrating your two speaker systems in a way that sounds good, this is your
tradeoff here. If you are already running a speaker in the lower range, you
will definitely see improvement cutting the lows from the tweeter amp.
Take a look at the Double Darling schematic at :
http://www.geocities.com/TimesSquare/1965/jeremy.html
The coupling cap is sized to roll off at 88 Hz using the formula
F = 1/ (2*pi*R*C)
with R being the grid resistor of the following stage and C being the
coupling cap.
This approach makes a high-pass filter without adding any new crossover
components, assuming you are using a cap-coupled stage somewhere in your
power amp. You can make a seperate filter if you like using the above
formula, just don't forget any parallel resistors when you are doing the
math. (input impedance of following piece of gear is in parallel with the
resistor to ground. If the following element is the grid of a tube, like in
my schematic, I think you are OK assuming its impedance to be very high and
ignoring it.)

Joes,
I´m still thinking about current drive and damping.
Maybe this is a silly idea but I can´t see why it should not work:
What happens if we use a low Q (strong magnet, low mechanical loss)
double voice coil speaker and drive it with a current amp on one
voice coil? Couldn´t we use a resistor on the second VC to get the
desired damping?
Regards
Manfred
