Mmmmm… Nothing like some hot, steaming yams off a bike vender. Life in Beijing is packed with strange scenes, and adventures, and the ever present reminder that no matter how hard you try, you will always be a “waiguoren” [alien] with all the good and bad connotations that entails. More
or less, life is comfortable and exciting, and as an expat it’s easy to get
used to things that at first seem so foreign. Sometimes you forget that China was ever a Communist country,
while at other times, the Big Red stares you squarely in the face. The
language barrier (i.e. my obvious lack of fluency) is everpresent and
something I try to battle through and study up on whenever possible. I have now managed to master the taxi
encounter and I can safely get through a restaurant meal without a huge dish
of pork landing on the table. Also,
this is Beijing after all, and many people do speak English. So, keep checking back, I’ll post new
pictures as new and wonderful things happen… |
