Arterial inflammation in bronchial asthma

BACKGROUND: Bronchial asthma is a chronic inflammatory condition associated with increased cardiovascular (CV) events. A concise radiosynthesis of the tau radiopharmaceutical, [(18) F]T807

Fluorine-18 labeled 7-(6-fluoropyridin-3-yl)-5H-pyrido[4,3-b]indole ([(18) F]T807) is a potent and selective agent for imaging paired helical filaments of tau and is among the most promising PET radiopharmaceuticals for this target in early clinical trials. The present study reports a simplified one-step method for the synthesis of [(18) F]T807 that is broadly applicable for routine clinical production using a GE TRACERlab™ FXFN radiosynthesis module.

Cortical deafness to dissonance

Ordinary listeners, including infants, easily distinguish consonant from dissonant pitch combinations and consider the former more pleasant than the latter. The preference for consonance over dissonance was tested in a patient, I.R., who suffers from music perception and memory disorders as a result of bilateral lesions to the auditory cortex. In Experiment 1, I.R. was found to be unable to distinguish consonant from dissonant versions of musical excerpts taken from the classical repertoire by rating their pleasantness.

Emotional responses to pleasant and unpleasant music correlate with activity in paralimbic brain regions

Neural correlates of the often-powerful emotional responses to music are poorly understood. Here we used positron emission tomography to examine cerebral blood flow (CBF) changes related to affective responses to music. Ten volunteers were scanned while listening to six versions of a novel musical passage varying systematically in degree of dissonance. Reciprocal CBF covariations were observed in several distinct paralimbic and neocortical regions as a function of dissonance and of perceived pleasantness/unpleasantness.

Intensely pleasurable responses to music correlate with activity in brain regions implicated in reward and emotion

We used positron emission tomography to study neural mechanisms underlying intensely pleasant emotional responses to music. Cerebral blood flow changes were measured in response to subject-selected music that elicited the highly pleasurable experience of "shivers-down-the-spine" or "chills." Subjective reports of chills were accompanied by changes in heart rate, electromyogram, and respiration.

Enabling global processing in simultanagnosia by psychophysical biasing of visual pathways

A fundamental aspect of visual cognition is our disposition to see the 'forest before the trees'. However, damage to the posterior parietal cortex, a critical brain region along the dorsal visual pathway, can produce a neurological disorder called simultanagnosia, characterized by a debilitating inability to perceive the 'forest' but not the 'trees' (i.e. impaired global processing despite intact local processing). This impairment in perceiving the global shape persists even though the ventral visual pathway, the primary recognition pathway, is intact in these patients.

Effect of Chelate Type and Radioisotope on the Imaging Efficacy of 4 Fibrin-Specific PET Probes

UNLABELLED: Thrombus formation plays a major role in cardiovascular diseases, but noninvasive thrombus imaging is still challenging. Fibrin is a major component of both arterial and venous thrombi and represents an ideal candidate for imaging of thrombosis. Recently, we showed that (64)Cu-DOTA-labeled PET probes based on fibrin-specific peptides are suitable for thrombus imaging in vivo; however, the metabolic stability of these probes was limited. Here, we describe 4 new probes using either (64)Cu or aluminum fluoride (Al(18)F) chelated to 2 NOTA derivatives.
